How We Built a Scalable Data and AI Platform with Databricks

Programmers, a specialist in AI, Data, and Software solutions, led the design and implementation of the data and artificial intelligence strategy for a leading mining company. We built a scalable, governed data foundation designed to support complex operations, using Databricks as the operational core of the platform. 

Challenge 

Enterprise AI comes with predictable challenges: pilots that never scale, lack of trusted data, rising costs, and weak data governance. 

Responsible AI investment at scale requires more than isolated tools. It demands a complete AI platform approach that integrates data foundations, agent orchestration, and a high-performance user experience layer. 

Solution 

The solution was designed as a three-layer architecture, with Databricks serving as the core platform supporting enterprise analytics, governance, and advanced AI applications simultaneously. 

Data Foundation and Governance 

The first step was establishing a Lakehouse architecture, where data moves through a structured quality pipeline before becoming business-ready: 

  • Bronze Layer: Raw data storage, preserving history, auditability, and reprocessing capabilities. 
  • Silver Layer: Cleansed and integrated data across business domains, enabling accurate technical analysis. 
  • Gold Layer: Business-ready datasets powering KPIs, executive reporting, Power BI, and Genie AI. 

The entire structure is governed through Unity Catalog, where we organized 17 business-domain catalogs covering areas such as Sales, Finance, HR, and Operations. 

This provided granular governance capabilities including sensitive data masking, automatic lineage tracking, and full auditability. 

To complete the architecture, we adopted a serverless approach, enabling on-demand scalability and cost optimization. 

AI Intelligence and Orchestration 

Once the trusted data foundation was in place, we built the intelligence layer. 

  • We used Agent Bricks as the orchestration and AI agent development platform. 
  • Integration through MCP (Model Context Protocol) connected Databricks with all enterprise satellite systems, allowing Claude and other models to combine data analysis and task execution through a single access layer. 

AI Products and User Experiences 

We implemented Genie as the enterprise-aware LLM capable of understanding organizational context and connecting directly to governed data sources so teams could extract insights in real time. 

Today, everyone from business analysts to operational managers can query data and trigger actions through GenAI using natural language. 

This eliminated dependence on static reports and technical intermediaries. In practice, it democratized access to data while maintaining governance and security, with all teams consuming information from the same trusted environment. 

Example business questions enabled by the platform 

  • HR: “How many active employees do we have by department?” 
  • Operations: “What was production output this week compared to last week?” 
  • Finance: “Which cost centers are over budget?” 
  • ESG: “What was the accident frequency rate this quarter?” 
  • Maintenance: “Which assets have overdue preventive maintenance?” 
  • Procurement: “Which contracts expire within the next 30 days?” 
  • Data/IT: “When was the last load for the HR Gold table?” 

Results 

  • 17 catalogs covering 100% of business areas; 
  • 3 active Genie Spaces for business users; 
  • 30+ available models, including Claude and GPT; 
  • End-to-end governance with Unity Catalog and Row-Level Security. 

Conclusion 

Our client’s data environment is now a modern, governed, AI-driven Lakehouse platform. 

The combination of Azure Databricks, Unity Catalog, Serverless Compute, Genie AI, and MCP integration with Claude positioned the company at the forefront of data and AI adoption in the mining industry. 

At the end of the day, mastery of modern technologies is what enables organizations to architect solutions that create measurable business impact.
